In conversation with Celebrity Stylist Ami Patel!

You cannot scan through Instagram, fashion websites or even Facebook without noticing her work. From outfitting the industry’s most photographed women, styling celebrities, films to editorials, former Fashion Director L’Officiel India and Creative Director Harper’s Bazaar India, to now collaborating with CaratLane for an exclusive collection of everyday-wear jewellery – there’s simply nothing Ami Patel cannot do!

Here’s a rundown of her personal style, life as a celebrity stylist and more about her collaborative collection with CaratLane –

What are the two most important questions you ask before you style someone?

I ask them about their personal style so that I know where to build up from, and if they have any favourite designers.

Who are your style icons?

I like making style ICONS without a reference point!

One piece you’re buying this summer to update your look?

An over-sized military duster coat from my favourite Japanese store at Le Marais.

Favorite look that you’ve styled till date?

Priyanka Chopra in Alexander Mcqueen for the Filmfare awards.

How do you stay updated on current trends?

Internet and my amazing team!

How do you choose which looks work best for each individual client?

I like to reflect my clients’ personality through the fashion they wear.

One thing you would never put a client in?

A look that’s been worn by someone else!

Challenges you face while shopping for everyday jewellery?

I never find what I want, and necessity is the mother of invention, hence my collection!

Do you buy jewellery online?

Yes I do shop jewellery online.

How would you define the personal style of the following ladies? Tell us in three words –

Alia Bhatt: Effortless, chic, individualistic

Kangana Ranaut: Fierce, feminie, chic

Priyanka Chopra: Edgy, experimental, sexy

Up-and-coming designers you are most excited about?

More than designers I love the new Indian silhouettes that all the young designers are creating.

One no-fail styling trick you have?

I always take a picture with a flash to see the actual effect of the look, especially before any red carpet event. An outfit can look completely different with a camera flash than when seen in person.

Favorite piece of jewellery you own?

My grandmother’s old choker which is an heirloom my mother gifted me.

Challenges you face while shopping for everyday jewellery?

I like a matte-less shine look for the jewelry I source or buy, but I find that sometimes the gold and the stones shine too much for my taste.

Do you buy jewellery online?

Yes. I just bought a pair of gold jhumkas from, my go-to for all my Indian looks.

You have collaborated with CaratLane for an exclusive collection. What is it all about?

I’ve always loved styling my stars in more delicate pieces of jewellery layered together. And I’ve found it difficult to find the right pieces, which is when I spoke to the founder and CEO of CaratLane, Mithun Sacheti, and he said it could totally happen. They have amazing resources to create any kind of jewellery.  As I mentioned, necessity is the mother of invention, and this was truly something I wanted to style my stars in!

Upcoming projects we can look forward to?

My collaboration with Madhurya, we have married ancient weaves with quirky motifs – It’s called my first Sari. This is a project that supports Indian weavers and the proceeds go towards first generation girl child education.
