Expert advice and effective solutions!
A pop on the skin signals something serious! Raging hormones, daily pollution to infectious-assaults- our skin puts up with a lot. Been clueless about your skin issues for a while? Let renowned aesthetic physician and author, Dr Jamuna Pai show you how!
Dull and dehydrated isn't what you want!
Why: As temperatures drop, humidity levels plunge too- leaving the skin dull and parched. Blame exposure to allergens such as dust, pet dander, or even pollen- dry skin is also often hereditary.
How To: Face creams rich in ingredients like lactic acid, urea, glycerine, shea butter work well. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, drinking plenty of water to help keep your skin hydrated. Include an oil capsule rich in Omega 3 fatty acid to keep the dryness at bay!
Invest in bags, just not below the eyes!
Why: Blame the sleeplessness or your erratic working hours, stress levels hold vital here.
How To: Invest in good quality Vitamin C and anti-oxidant supplements. If low on haemoglobin, correct with iron supplements.
Secret Remedy: Place a slice of cucumber or a raw potato slice in the refrigerator for 10 to 15 minutes and apply on your dark circles regularly.
Excessive shine isn't that flattering!
Why: As the skin produces unreasonable amount of sebum, the surface appears oily. Excess humidity, unhealthy eating and age factors are major contributors too.
How To: Use a face-wash containing salicylic acid to absorb all the oil. Opt for toners with antibacterial and oil-absorbing properties, and with ingredients like lactic, glycolic or salicylic acid to exfoliate your skin and keep all pores clear. Avoid alcohol-based products.
Secret Remedy: Mix two tablespoons of raw milk or milk powder, while adding two tsps of cucumber juice and few drops of lemon. Apply this on the face with a cotton ball. Allow it to dry, wash with cold water and pat it dry.
Flaky clothes and all things itchy!
Why: As the scalp becomes dry and greasy, the oil causes dead skin cells to clump and appear as white flakes. Innumerable skin conditions like psoriasis and over-growth of yeast can also be held responsible!
How To: Hygiene is crucial so wash your hair and scalp regularly, especially after a workout. Use a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo once a week or wash with triphala powder.
Secret Remedy: Apply apple cider vinegar on your scalp for 10-15 minutes and rinse it off quick!
Close open doors with solutions from the expert!
Why: Tiny holes containing hair follicles act as outlets for sebum. Due to the presence of acne, the over activity of the sebaceous glands is responsible for large open pores.
How To: Reduce gland activities, improve skin firmness and tighten the skin. Pick up Vitamin A or zinc supplements from the nearest medical store.
Cosmetic treatments to try: Fractional Laser, Microdermabrassion and enzyme peels.
Don’t grin and bear!
Why: Over-reactive glands turn the skin oily by producing excessive sebum (body secretion). The same leads to blocked pores causing comedones (small bumps) and acne.
How To: Invest in a salicylic acid-based face wash to help reduce the oiliness on the skin.
Secret Remedy: Try mud-based face masks to absorb the excess sebum.
UNEVEN SKIN TONE AND ACNE SCARS
Don’t let discoloration rattle your confidence!
Why: Overproduction of melanin leaves your skin-tone uneven, with an unflattering complexion. Persistent exposure to the sun, hormonal changes or even scarring of the skincare spearhead uneven skin tones.
How To: Skin-lightening ingredients like Kojic Acid, Vitamin C, Azelaic acid and Hydroquinone can reduce dark spots. Alternatively, opt for skin-brightening peels to lessen pigmented patches, besides taking anti-oxidant and Vitamin C internal supplements to help fight accumulation of free radicals in the system.
