Buying denim? Here are rules of buying the perfect one
Text: Jehan Vazifdar
With endless qualities of denim storming the fashion market, finding the perfect pair can set you apart. The unwritten rules of buying jeans are something that few know, but all should. From raucous rips to mortifying mom-jeans, here’s how to make sure your denim choices are on point!
MASSIVE RIPS WON’T ALWAYS WORK
Ripped jeans are tricky! A lot of times, people venture too far. There is a difference between engineered tears and a gaping, shapeless hole at your thigh. While investing in rips, make sure that they don’t interfere with the actual shape and fit. Rips are add-ons, and should add to the pair of jeans (not take over it). However, if massive gaps are your thing- look at creative ways to elevate them, like fastening a big rip with safety pins!
KNOW WHICH FIT SUITS YOU BEST
First off, skinny jeans are not the only kind of jeans in existence. Secondly, they’re not for everyone. Skinny jeans are possibly the most popular fit right now, but with people paying such little attention to fit and (dare I say it) size, this results in back pockets being far lower than they should. With the return of the flared bottom, now is the time to abandon those superbly-tight denims and try something new!
PATCHES, DO OR DON’T?
We’ve all been seeing a rise in the ‘patch’ trend, especially in jeans and jackets. They’re an unusual and fashionable way to lend a touch of originality to your jeans. However, going overboard ventures into the comical. A couple of patches can be cool and add life to a simple bit of clothing, but too many could look like you lost your boys scout jacket and your jeans were your only back-up.
TAILORING IS KEY
Tailoring isn’t restricted to suits! Jeans have been stereotyped as casual (almost lazy wear), but the clean, sharp lines and perfect hem of a beautiful pair will not only grab attention, but also make you feel confident and professional! Although buying tailored jeans would be significantly more expensive, it’s going to be worth your buck!
Fast fashion brands offer jeans that don't possess the quality, fit and longevity you need! Save up, resist buying every pair you see, and invest in something that will last far longer. Yes, they would be comparatively expensive, but with the heightened price tag comes a fantastic fit, incredible comfort, functionality, reduced amount of washes needed, a longer lasting colour and a great brand name (if that matters to you).
