Ladies, it’s about the shape not the size and about knowing how to dress for your body shape. Since everyone needs a little knowledge of their body type and how to dress up according to what looks good, here are a few key tips, do’s and don’ts for the three body types that mainly are seen in us Indian women.

The Pear body: A very popular shape among Indian women, the pear shape is characterized by a wider lower body and a well-defined waistline. The key is to show off your slender upper body while creating a fuller illusion to achieve a balance with the fuller hips.

Keys to work this body type:

  • Show off your slim upper body while creating a fuller illusion to achieve a balance with your hips.
  • Minimise your lower half by creating an illusion of elongation.
  • Work with darker colors for bottoms.
  • Use different styles, colors and materials to reduce the lower half.
  • Heels are always an asset.

What to wear:

  • Bottoms: Straight leg pants, flared pants, A-line skirts,

The Hourglass body: The most coveted body type of all, the hour glass is characterised with the upper and lower body type being of similar proportions and a svelt waist resembling an hourglass.

Keys to work this body type:

  • Show off the curves.
  • Accentuate with the right amount of cling.
  • Pair bottoms with the correct top.
  • Don’t pick tops that make the upper body look heavy.
  • Stilettos are a favorite choice.

What to wear:

  • Tops: V- neck lines, Jersey tops, well fitted jackets, peplum tops, corsets, halter necklines.
  • Bottoms: Pencil skirts, mermaid style bottoms, slim jeans, fitted trousers.

The Apple Body: With an apple shaped body, most of the weight lies in the upper torso. Shoulders are wider compared to the other body types with narrow hips and legs.

Keys to work this body type:

  • Give an illusion of a slimmer upper body by minimizing the broad shoulders.
  • Use lighter colors for the bottom half.
  • Create more curves in the bottom half of the body.

What to wear:

  • Tops: V- necks, wider necklines, empire waist lines, Asymmetric tops.
  • Bottoms: Straight fit pants, cargo’s, A-line skirts, flared bottoms.
  • Shoes: Stilettos, delicate heels.

What to avoid:

  • Tops: Horizontal stripes, Padded shoulder, cap sleeves, tissue tops, embroidered tops
  • Bottoms: Skinny jeans, pencil skirts
  • Shoes: Platforms, strappy shoes
