American runner Maggie Vessey has lately been making waves with her eye-catching track outfits. She’s been creating chicer running gear in collaboration with L.A. based designer Merlin Castell. Her running gear includes tasteful cuts and colorful prints.
“I do want to draw attention to the sport and maybe give people who aren’t necessarily interested in track and field a reason to be interested,” Vessey told Runner’s World in an interview.
The last athlete to make such a bold fashion statement on field was Florence Griffith Joyner in the 80’s. ‘Flo-Jo’ was famous for her one-legged unitards that she wore in every colour.
While these women know how to kill it with fashion on field, our own female athletes have got the art of tasteful dressing off-field down pat. Indian athletes have graced the covers of several fashion glossies, walked the runway and stepped out in classy stilettos. Let’s have a look at five such Indian sportswomen who’re as chic as they are sporty.
Sania Mirza – Discovered when she was 16, Mirza became the first female tennis champion to put India on the international radar. The pretty Hyderabadi girl has also been featured in various magazines and has walked the runway for Shantanu & Nikhil a few times.
Saina Nehwal – World No. 7 badminton champion Saina Nehwal remains still relatively untouched by glamour, but that doesn’t mean the girl doesn’t have style. She has a subtle, understated style that epitomizes “sporty chic”.
Jwala Gutta – The mixed doubles champion is known for her “loud, controversy queen” personality, but there’s no denying that the talented badminton player has quite a fiery style that’s all her own. She was the cover star for the Man magazine in 2012.
Ashwini Ponappa – Gutta’s partner in mixed doubles, Ashwini impressed us with her pixie like crop. Anybody who can carry a short hairstyle that well is worthy of respect!
Dipika Pallikal – She continues to be the highest ranked Indian Squash player, with being 12th on the World Rankings. But the pretty squash player harbors a deep love for all things fashion too, and has a fun, slightly edgy personal style!
